Cousin

Nov 5, 2007 | No comments

Cousin is a no-nonsense Hong Kong owned canteen serving up good quality Cantonese food at reasonable prices. Quietly hidden opposite the Friendship Store, the small front opens into a large and always busy eating area, with a similar sized but always empty area upstairs.

This is a very popular place for locals eating lunch or dinner, and it is very much a canteen environment with an almost ruthless level of efficiency designed to serve lots of food to lots of people.

Bellagio Taiwan Cuisine

Aug 13, 2006 | No comments

Bellagio is one of Guangzhou's most famous Taiwanese restaurants. For prices ranging mid-high you get served delicious food by an army of short-haired girls in a modern blood-red environment.

This place is very popular and that brings with it a lot of noise. Probably more suited to an evening of fun with friends than any romance. Of particular note are the fruit juices.

Ba shu xuan

Ba Shu Xuan is a 'Hot Pot' restaurant serving Chinese hot pot. If you are unfamiliar with this term it is a popular Northern Chinese dish in which you sit at a round table with a small stove in the middle. A large dish of molten lava (aka spicy soup) is placed on the stove. The menu consists of a selection of meats and vegetables which are brought to you raw, and you cook them yourself in the soup.

Prices here are reasonable and the spices range from medium to nuclear holocaust. Food is good and staff are polite, although none speak English. This would make a great place to bring friends where you can all sit around the table and eat and talk.

Dong bei ren logo

Bringing flavours from the North East of China to Guangzhou, this is a very popular restaurant and is always busy, noisy, and crowded. Don't let that put you off though, as the food is delicious - it's full of dark rich tastes that contrasts sharply to subtle Cantonese food.

Although the menu is not in English (there are lots of pictures), and no staff can speak any English, it is still frequented by a lot of non-Chinese. The staff are very friendly and show the rare emotion of smiling.

The Peninsula

The peninsula exterior

Peninsula is one of Guangzhou's most famous and popular Cantonese restaurants. It is located on Ersha Island, and is typically frequented by high class business people and government officials.

The restaurant is like a neon lightbulb by the beach, and it looks like the designer was trying to mix the 1980's with the seaside. Expect to pay high prices for your food, and the restaurant is busy and reservations are essential. Despite all glamour, we found the food to be severely lacking, with everything tasting of pork fat.

Lee Garden is one of the more expensive Cantonese restaurants in Guangzhou, serving up a large selection of high class and rare food (especially seafood).

The restaurant is very Hong Kong style, and not surprisingly the owners are from Hong Kong. The dimsum is very good (the spring rolls are great), as is the soup and seafood. Prices reflect their Hong Kong origins and tend to be high, although the staff are polite and do smile.

Gz restaurant

Established for over 50 years, the Guangzhou Restaurant is one of the most established restaurants in the city. It certainly looks the part. However, this cannot make up for the terrible dimsum, with soft spring rolls, and impolite staff.

Prices range 200-400 for a dinner, with dimsum 70-120. The environment is noisy and mainly consists of older people.

E Gong Cun Cantonese Restaurant

Aug 12, 2006 | No comments

E Gong Cun is famous for it's Roast Goose - some even say it's almost as delicious as it's Peking Duck. As well as this, another popular dish is it's steamed chicken.

Apparently all poultry are organically raised, explaining the taste (and popularity) of the meat dishes.
