Milano Italian Restauant
Milano Italian Restaurant is an elegant and simply designed restaurant located exactly opposite the Garden Hotel, making it a perfect choice for visitors.
They have an outdoor area, along with a large selection of wines. Food is very good with large portions, although this does come at a price. Wine will set you back between 300-600, and food between 30-200.
Little Italy
Conveniently located close to the Garden Hotel this restaurant serving Italian food is sure to be popular with business people and tourists. It's set in a large old house just off Huan Shi Dong Lu, amidst a beautiful garden.
The interior of the restaurant, however, is not so beautiful, and you are basically sat inside someone's house - from the furniture to the carpet, it's all very homely, and the restaurant is spread across several small rooms. This may make for a more cosy atmosphere, but it makes for a difficult time attracting the attention of staff.
Anti Pasto Bar & Restaurant
One of our favourite Italian restaurants in Guangzhou, Anti-Pasto is tucked quietly away behind the Garden Hotel. Tastefully decorated in an interest round building, and serving good Italian food, it's the place to head to when you want some exclusivity from the usual pandemonium of Chinese restaurants.
The staff speak English and have learnt the most important rule of Western restaurants - don't hover around your customers.
Haveli Indian Restaurant & Bar
1920 German Restaurant
The reason for this restaurant’s name is that it was built in 1920 by some Germans, and has since then become Guangzhou’s centre for all things Germanic.
As you would expect, the restaurant serves up a fine selection of German food, with imported beers (the 'PulanerWeissBeer' is popular) and sausages. Portions are generally small.
Dong Bei Ren - North East People Restaurant
Bringing flavours from the North East of China to Guangzhou, this is a very popular restaurant and is always busy, noisy, and crowded. Don't let that put you off though, as the food is delicious - it's full of dark rich tastes that contrasts sharply to subtle Cantonese food.
Although the menu is not in English (there are lots of pictures), and no staff can speak any English, it is still frequented by a lot of non-Chinese. The staff are very friendly and show the rare emotion of smiling.
The Peninsula
Peninsula is one of Guangzhou's most famous and popular Cantonese restaurants. It is located on Ersha Island, and is typically frequented by high class business people and government officials.
The restaurant is like a neon lightbulb by the beach, and it looks like the designer was trying to mix the 1980's with the seaside. Expect to pay high prices for your food, and the restaurant is busy and reservations are essential. Despite all glamour, we found the food to be severely lacking, with everything tasting of pork fat.
Tang Chinese Cuisine
Tang Chinese Cuisine, courtesy of the same owner as the Tang night club, serves Cantonese food.
Prices are good, although the Dimsum is not. The other food is better.
Made in Kitchen
Made in Kitchen is a fusion restaurant, serving you as many types of food as possible, including Japanese, Cantonese, Thai, and other Asian cuisines.
One of the most noticeable features of Made in Kitchen is the large open-plan kitchen, allowing you to watch the chefs make and prepare your food. The design of this restaurant is very elegant, simple and modern; everytime when you go to the table, you need to pass the 70 meters long walkway making you feel like a model on a catwalk (for better or worse!)
Lei Garden Restaurant
Lee Garden is one of the more expensive Cantonese restaurants in Guangzhou, serving up a large selection of high class and rare food (especially seafood).
The restaurant is very Hong Kong style, and not surprisingly the owners are from Hong Kong. The dimsum is very good (the spring rolls are great), as is the soup and seafood. Prices reflect their Hong Kong origins and tend to be high, although the staff are polite and do smile.
Jiao Mei Restaurant
Jiao Mei Restaurant is one of Guangzhou's most delicious sources for Cantonese food, with their speciality being crunchy toasted doves.
Prices are reasonable and the spring rolls is near perfect. Jiao Mei has also opened another nearby restaurant called "Lan Kwai Fong", serving Thai food.
Madison American Food & Drink
Madison American Food & Drink is a slice of all-American pie in Guangzhou, proving you everything from American steaks to American-style sandwiches.
It has a nice environment and is very suitable for business people to stop by for lunch or dinner. Prices range from 50-100 for starters, and 120-250 for main courses, so tends towards the expensive end. However, pizzas are very well priced (slightly cheaper than Pizza Hut), and Sandwiches are the same price as Subway (18-40). Burgers come with a bountiful supply of beef, and sandwiches are made from freshly cooked bread. Super stuff.
Sportsman's American Restaurant
The Sportsman's American Restaurant is another slice of America in Guangzhou. Spread across two floors not only does it provide a wide selection of authentic American food, but it has a well-stocked bar, along with many bar games and a large upstairs area appropriate for private gatherings.
Salads are great, and pizzas are large and well-stocked (the feta-cheese pizza is particularly good). Most ingredients are imported, and they even make their own homous. Portions are large and prices are very reasonable.
Fruity Mix
Fruity Mix is certainly one of the healthiest cafes in Guangzhou, serving up a huge range of fruit-based drinks and food. The environment is equally fruity, with bold and colourful chairs and tables, as well as pictures of fruit on the walls.
Everything on the menu contains fruit, in one form or another. Ever fancied a strawberry pizza? What about a fried rice with kiwi? This is certainly the place to come if you want to try something unusual and you'll probably be surprised at how good some of the more exotic combinations are.
