Set in the funky catacombs that are the Backstreet underneath Citic Plaza, Le Vila is a stylish modern café restaurant that aims to bridge the gap between quality and value for money, and this it does with enthusiasm.

If you've never been to the backstreet, it is a tunnel that goes under Citic Plaza, and can be found just outside the main shopping mall. The tunnel is full of small boutique shops, restaurants, a foreign-food supermarket, and lots of other interesting designer places. Le Vila can be found immediately upon entering one entrance, and is a large café with an 'outdoor' seating area (outdoor of the café) that is pleasantly surrounded with plants and water.

Buongiorno is one of the latest batch of Western restaurants in Guangzhou, and has a prime location in the popular Jian She Liu Ma Lu area (just opposite the Garden Hotel). The restaurant is owned and staffed by Italians, and you are guaranteed to see the Italian owners running around the restaurant and ensuring everyone is happy during busy periods.

The food is decent enough, although it tends towards a generic Thai/Malay curry that seems to be popular in Guangzhou, yet bears only a passing resemblance to real dishes.

Pizza Hut, for those times when your cheese cravings can't be satisified anywhere else. Likely to be the same standard the world over, serving you 'a decent pizza' (especially the thin-base). Not as good as a real pizzeria, but better than most you can find in the psuedo-Italian restaurants in China.

Service is good, queues often long (especially around noon and 6pm), and prices are generally higher than elsewhere. However, it's quick, clean, and consistent. If you like what's on special offer then you can also get a good deal.

Prices are expensive. There is a lunch buffet (Monday to Friday) from 48-98. Salads are 28-58, Italian rice is 58, Pizza / Pasta is 68, and main courses between 140-200.

Pizzas, while small, are perfectly formed and tasty. Prices are good, averaging around 40 for a 9" pizza.

Danny's Bagels is one of the few pizza delivery companies in Guangzhou, offering pizzas, sandwiches, pastas, and burgers for delivery.

Staff are competent, pizzas are good, and repeat orders often goes rewarded. Best of all, they actually have an internet site with full menu - amazing!

Madison American Food & Drink is a slice of all-American pie in Guangzhou, proving you everything from American steaks to American-style sandwiches.

It has a nice environment and is very suitable for business people to stop by for lunch or dinner. Prices range from 50-100 for starters, and 120-250 for main courses, so tends towards the expensive end. However, pizzas are very well priced (slightly cheaper than Pizza Hut), and Sandwiches are the same price as Subway (18-40). Burgers come with a bountiful supply of beef, and sandwiches are made from freshly cooked bread. Super stuff.

The Sportsman's American Restaurant is another slice of America in Guangzhou. Spread across two floors not only does it provide a wide selection of authentic American food, but it has a well-stocked bar, along with many bar games and a large upstairs area appropriate for private gatherings.

Salads are great, and pizzas are large and well-stocked (the feta-cheese pizza is particularly good). Most ingredients are imported, and they even make their own homous. Portions are large and prices are very reasonable.

Fruity Mix is certainly one of the healthiest cafes in Guangzhou, serving up a huge range of fruit-based drinks and food. The environment is equally fruity, with bold and colourful chairs and tables, as well as pictures of fruit on the walls.

Everything on the menu contains fruit, in one form or another. Ever fancied a strawberry pizza? What about a fried rice with kiwi? This is certainly the place to come if you want to try something unusual and you'll probably be surprised at how good some of the more exotic combinations are.
